[00:46] Bobby: So anyway, we are here, and it’s hot as balls in Vegas, it’s about 112 outside.

[00:53] Bobby: Yeah man, just great, great time to be walking around and just dying.

[00:58] Jason: Oh please, like you, come on man, no, you give Casper a run for his money.

[01:00] Bobby: You know what we do in Vegas? We walk from one place to another with air conditioning, air-conditioned car to the air-conditioned strip.

[01:07] Jason: To the air-conditioned parking garage.

[01:10] Bobby: You ever go in the parking garages in Vegas? They’re like saunas.

[01:13] Jason: Yes, it’s horrific.

[01:15] Bobby: So let’s recap episode seven.

[01:18] Jason: Hold on, wait a second.

[01:19] Bobby: No, wait, wait, wait, I wanna tell you something.

[01:21] Jason: Okay, all right.

[01:23] Bobby: I’ve been glitch-free for at least three episodes, and I’m so proud of myself. Can I get a clap? Thank you very much.

[01:35] Jason: So, voila, oui oui, whoa-ho, le french fry.

[01:41] Bobby: What the hell?

[01:42] Jason: Le plume.

[01:42] Bobby: I love when there’s a pause. So, I noticed that Patty, our big fan of the show, she brought something up.

[01:54] Jason: I was gonna let that one fly by too.

[01:56] Bobby: Oh man, shit happens.

[01:58] Jason: So wait, come on man, you just can’t do that, some people don’t look that far into the comments.

[02:03] Bobby: Okay, so what happened? Spill the beans.

[02:05] Jason: I’ll spill the beans. Well, instead of, fringe benefits, like boots and jackets and stuff, Bobby went with the old French benefits, which, when you’re a teenager at the roller rink, the French benefits with a girl is pretty good.

[02:20] Bobby: But what if we were in France? Could I say French benefits?

[02:23] Jason: No, the French would not like us, that doesn’t work, that wouldn’t help in the least.

[02:26] Bobby: All right, well, it was very small, minor, just a small glitch.

[02:31] Jason: It’s like when you work at some place where they say, “This place has been accident free for like 100 days,” it doesn’t matter, someone stumps their toe, it just always comes back to haunt you.

[02:40] Jason: Well, it’s because you’re just so public about it.

[02:42] Bobby: Hey Patty, I don’t hate you, it’s all good.

[02:44] Jason: Oh, I love you, Patty, thanks babe.

[02:47] Bobby: So, something happened this past week, I just wanted to bring it up, you know I’m a big Star Wars fan, as you are, Jason. And we know that Kenny Baker, who plays R2-D2, he passed away, and it’s a sad moment, he really brought the life to R2.

[03:04] Jason: Yes, he did, I mean, it’s somebody you never got a chance to really see, but you saw, him and Anthony Daniels, who plays C-3PO.

[03:13] Bobby: Who I met one time.

[03:15] Jason: Oh yeah, I think I saw a picture, you gotta put that up.

[03:17] Bobby: Yeah, I will.

[03:17] Jason: The fact that you can’t see these actors, and they’re just basically wrapped in metal, but they evoke so much emotion.

[03:27] Bobby: Yes they did, and the relationship between C-3PO and R2 is legendary, I love how they interact in these films.

[03:36] Bobby: Even though R2 doesn’t say a word, the sounds say it all, he has different sounds for different emotions, and Kenny Baker, he did a great job, he really brought R2 to life.

[03:47] Jason: I mean, even think about the little things, all he could do was hop back and forth foot to foot, or spin around, he did a really amazing job.

[03:57] Bobby: So anyway, rest in peace, Kenny, you’re gonna live forever, those films are never gonna go away for generations, for years and decades and hundreds of years.

[04:08] Jason: I wonder if they’re gonna bury him in like an R2-D2 casket. How appropriate would that be?

[04:14] Bobby: It might be.

[04:15] Jason: Yeah, and how about that trailer for Rogue One?

[04:21] Bobby: Oh man, Rogue One is coming out December, and Jason and I will be there first night, cannot wait.

[04:28] Jason: It’s so cool that they’re expanding the whole universe, me and Bob really fangirled out on that, I’ll be honest with you.

[04:35] Bobby: We did. For those of you who don’t know, Rogue One takes place between episode three and episode four, so what’s gonna happen is we’re gonna see the return of Darth Vader.

[04:48] Jason: That’s right. See, now, I guess everybody out there didn’t realize it was also the awesome ’80s podcast, but the total nerd podcast too.

[04:56] Bobby: Exactly, so yeah, we’re really excited, I put the trailer on my Facebook, and man, it looks great, it looks like they’re bringing it back to the original type of episodes’ style.

[05:10] Jason: It looks epic is what it looks like.

[05:12] Bobby: It looks huge, and the ATs are in there, I love those walkers.

[05:15] Jason: Oh, that’s awesome, that’s amazing. Yeah, so I don’t know, watching that trailer, I think I saw it during the Olympics, have you been watching the Olympics at all?

[05:27] Bobby: Yeah, I’ve been watching some of the swimming, I see we’re kicking some ass in swimming.

[05:30] Jason: Yeah, well I also read today in the paper that Ryan Lochte, he just got held up at gunpoint down in Rio.

[05:38] Bobby: I heard they got robbed.

[05:39] Jason: Yeah, it was criminals that dressed up as cops that robbed him.

[05:46] Bobby: Yeah, and I think that’s Michael Phelps’s nemesis, right, they’ve been battling all these years, but they’re boys, they’re like roommates and whatnot.

[05:52] Jason: Yeah, no, I know they’re friends.

[05:54] Bobby: But I read that when they’re in the pool, there’s competing.

[05:57] Jason: It’d be like you and me, if I was winning every heat, you know-

[06:01] Bobby: He would stick that in my face, but we laugh about it later.

[06:04] Jason: Have you ever been to Rio?

[06:06] Bobby: I’ve never been to Rio, I’ve been to South America, but never to Rio, it looks great.

[06:10] Jason: It looks like it’s a lot of fun, but from everything I heard, I wouldn’t wanna swim in the water.

[06:14] Bobby: You know, I’m looking forward to the track and field, because when I was in high school, I ran track and field.

[06:19] Jason: Oh yeah, that’s right, didn’t you?

[06:19] Bobby: I ran the mile, I was a distance runner, and I stopped when I went to college, and I ran in college for a couple years, and then I left college and I stopped running, because man, I lost so much weight, I was so skinny.

[06:33] Jason: I remember.

[06:33] Bobby: And I looked like a toothpick, so I said, “You know what, this has gotta stop.”

[06:37] Jason: Well, what were some of the big events you ran?

[06:40] Bobby: I ran the Philadelphia Marathon two times.

[06:44] Jason: How far, how long?

[06:44] Bobby: It’s 26.1 miles.

[06:44] Jason: Holy shit.

[06:44] Bobby: I, when I was 14 years old, I ran it in, I think it was two hours and 40 minutes.

[06:59] Jason: I can’t even imagine, I can’t run for 10 minutes, it’s a big deal. And I mean, even though I’m older, you used to run, so for you to be able to run like that, you had to run every day, didn’t you?

[07:09] Bobby: Yeah, I was training, probably running 10 miles a day, seven days a week, and I was about 135 pounds. Just for an example, today I weigh 168 pounds, and if I started to run again, I’d probably drop down to 140 real quick.

[07:28] Jason: Oh, I don’t know if you could do all that now, we’re a little bit older, aren’t we?

[07:32] Bobby: No. But you know what I miss? I miss the competition, the days of the races, it was exciting.

[07:39] Jason: But what’s that like? You’re in a whole group of people, everybody’s pushing an elbow in each other, is everybody cool?

[07:44] Bobby: Well, nah, it’s not, it can get like that, but in a distance race there’s a lot of time, so you don’t get so much of that as you do maybe in a quarter mile or half a mile, where it’s really blazing.

[07:58] Jason: What goes through your mind in 26 miles?

[08:01] Bobby: Oh man, I don’t know, you’re just looking, there’s fans all along the route, they’re clapping, they’re handing you water, you just look ahead and try and keep the pace. I’m not sure what I was thinking at the time other than I just wanna finish.

[08:17] Jason: Wow. See that, ladies and gents, right there? That was just something, we’re not scripted, it just comes right out.

[08:22] Bobby: Nah man, I didn’t even know he was gonna bring it up. But you know what else happened last week? I wanted to mention that Marlon Dow was part of the show, and he brought a lot to the table, I thought it was great, and it was great having him with us.

[08:34] Jason: Well, just having Marlon there, it’s just, and he’s so knowledgeable.

[08:39] Bobby: He really is.

[08:39] Jason: He’s knowledgeable, but it’s just, when you talk to him, it’s like you and me talking, it feels like home. It just feels so, wow, this is great, and having Marlon was-

[08:48] Bobby: Yep. And Marlon’s gonna join us in the next couple segments, he’ll be in every show, and we’re always gonna have a moment with Marlon.

[08:56] Jason: A moment with Marlon.

[08:57] Bobby: We need to make a voiceover and play this sound, “A moment with Marlon.”

[09:01] Jason: I’m working on it, I got something up the sleeve.

[09:05] Bobby: We’re growing, we’re like a garage band.

[09:06] Jason: That’s exactly what we’re like. We are a garage band on tape.

[09:11] Jason: It’s like we’ve suddenly discovered Dad’s LSD records, as we’re going along, you know?

[09:16] Bobby: And just keep in mind, everybody who’s listening, you’re here in the beginning, so it can only get better.

[09:21] Jason: That’s right, you’ll remember us when we were geeky and wore those high tube socks, at the beginning of the show.

[09:28] Bobby: Bro, we’re always gonna be geeky, it’s not true. Oh, speaking of the socks, man, I put a picture, you saw it, right, in the arcade, do you see the tube socks with the colors?

[09:37] Jason: Oh, yeah.

[09:37] Bobby: And did you used to buy the six-pack?

[09:39] Jason: I not only bought those, but I bought those shorts too.

[09:42] Bobby: Yo bro, that picture of that kid, it’s not me, but that’s exactly how I looked, same shorts, same hair, same socks, man, spent hours in the arcade.

[09:52] Jason: Spent money on stuff like that, yeah, what kind of games was, like, what did you play?

[09:56] Jason: I liked the more complicated games, like one thing I was really really good at that I was so proud of was Dragon’s Lair, I could beat Dragon’s Lair, but once you beat it once then it was reversed, then I’d go reverse.

[10:09] Bobby: Oh wow, you did that.

[10:10] Jason: Yeah, I did it both ways.

[10:10] Bobby: I never got that far, but you know what I completed? Donkey Kong.

[10:13] Jason: Oh, wow.

[10:14] Bobby: Donkey Kong, but I spent so much money and so much time. Oh man, I love Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, I used to love Pole Position.

[10:22] Jason: Pole Position was great. What about the karate ones, you remember the karate ones?

[10:25] Bobby: Yes, those were, I was never really good at those, but I remember those.

[10:28] Jason: And what was the other one, Pizza Pasta, from that Punch-Out game, Pizza Pasta.

[10:36] Bobby: Pizza Pasta.

[10:37] Jason: That’s it, that’s a good, Bob, you did a good job with the accent there.

[10:39] Bobby: Oh, that’s a good, I wanna have a silly good throwing with my Pizza Pasta, come on. So yeah, thanks for that link you sent me to Groupon.

[10:50] Jason: There you go man, so what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna go to GameWorks down at Town Square, and we got like all day.

[10:59] Bobby: Yeah man, we’re gonna be getting our game on and getting our grub on.

[11:04] Jason: And maybe even have a couple beers, and who knows, maybe we’ll take some pictures and some Periscopes and stuff.

[11:08] Bobby: We’ll definitely get some behind-the-scenes stuff for the peeps.

[12:04] Bobby: So bro, I wanted to ask you, how did you feel in last week’s episode, being your first, how did you feel?

[12:11] Marlon: Well, yeah, I was a bit nervous, but it was good nerves. I thought it was a good time, and, like I said, I just wish that I was sitting at that desk with you guys.

[12:25] Jason: Well, this is the next best thing.

[12:28] Bobby: Yeah, and you will be sitting in the studio in the near future, we know that.

[12:32] Jason: Absolutely, and you know what’s really cool for everybody out there listening is we’ve got Marlon up on video, so it’s like one of those futuristic things, we’re all sitting here, he’s sitting here.

And Miami Vice was a TV show that started in 1984, ended in 1990, it set the stage for TV for the rest of TV’s days, it set the style, and there’s a lot of people that were on the show that are movie stars today, that got their first stab at TV back in the ’80s.

[14:13] Marlon: And so I got a list of actors that I want you to tell me which actor did not star on the show.

[14:24] Jason: Ooh, this is good, all right, I like this, I’m in trouble.

[16:20] Marlon: So I’m gonna start with Jason, and say which one of these fabulous actors did not star on Miami Vice?

[16:27] Jason: G. Gordon Liddy.

[16:29] Marlon: Okay, all right, Bobby.

[16:31] Bobby: I say Kurt Russell.

[16:35] Marlon: Okay, Jason, you are wrong, my friend.

[16:37] Jason: Oh, damn it!

[16:39] Bobby: Oh man, I’m so disappointed in you, Jason. You are right, my friend, holy shit. Do I get like a gold star sticker?

[16:50] Bobby: I’m so talented, Captain Glitch.

[16:52] Jason: No, you’re the new Captain Glitch. Marlon, that was great, that was awesome.

[16:58] Marlon: Now here’s the thing, you said G. Gordon Liddy as if he’s never acted before, probably. He’s a guy, he’s a Washington guy, he’s actually a Watergate guy too.

[17:08] Jason: Yeah, Watergate, that’s how I knew who he was.

[17:11] Marlon: Actually, G. Gordon Liddy played a bad guy on Miami Vice.

[17:15] Bobby: Yeah bro, that’s an amazing list of actors, a lot of those surprise me.

[17:20] Jason: Me too, I was really impressed with that.

[17:22] Marlon: Yeah, you were talking about a young Julia Roberts. Bruce Willis was one of the best I saw on that list because he played a bad guy. You gotta remember, Bruce Willis, he does a lot of wholesome projects, he’s a good cop, good guy. He was such a badass on this show that I have, he even hit a woman, he was really wicked.

[17:44] Bobby: What year was that, do you think?

[17:46] Marlon: Well, Bruce Willis, that was 1985, pretty much everybody was 1985.

[17:54] Bobby: That’s around when I started on the show.

[17:56] Jason: Yeah, that’s smack dab in the middle of the beginning right there.

[17:59] Bobby: Yeah man, the show.

[18:00] Marlon: Yeah, the show. And I have to say, the first year, 1984, 1985, were in fact the best years of Miami Vice.

[18:09] Bobby: So do you have the box set, DVD, Blu-ray?

[18:13] Jason: You still have the poster on the wall?

[18:15] Marlon: Yeah, I have a five box set, from beginning to end, even the last year where the show wasn’t really good writing, I have those too, so I’m a big fan.

[18:30] Bobby: You know, Miami Vice, I think the biggest impact was the fashion.

[18:35] Bobby: I think that was the most thing that stuck out to me.

[18:39] Marlon: Hey, let me ask you guys something, do you remember NBC exec Brandon Tartikoff?

[18:44] Jason: Oh, yeah.

[18:45] Bobby: Of course.

[18:45] Jason: I know who that guy is.

[18:47] Marlon: He was the head guy at NBC. Well, his thought pattern was, “I wanna create a show that is basically MTV with badges.”

[18:58] Jason: Great, and you know what, in retrospect, if you look at it, that was a brilliant tact to take, that was great.

[19:04] Marlon: Absolutely. And so what happened is, do you guys remember the show Hill Street Blues?

[19:10] Jason: Oh yeah.

[19:11] Bobby: Of course.

[19:12] Marlon: Okay, so there was a young writer there named Anthony Yerkovich, and he was a writer on Hill Street Blues, and they had these two characters on Hill Street Blues, it was like this Black cop and this white cop. These guys were very popular characters. He decided, “Let me take these two characters and put them in South Beach, put them in Miami,” and that’s how he got the concept for Miami Vice.

[19:36] Bobby: Wow, give them some cool clothes, a cool car.

[19:40] Marlon: Yeah.

[19:41] Jason: Lots of women and boats.

[19:44] Bobby: Yeah, that was a good one, man.

[19:46] Marlon: Yeah, and here’s another really interesting trivia, you know Don Johnson, he wasn’t the original guy, he was kind of a failed TV actor for a lot of years, he had four different pilots that really bombed. They originally wanted Jeff Bridges.

[20:05] Bobby: Really? Jeff Bridges.

[20:06] Jason: Jeff Bridges.

[20:07] Bobby: I like Jeff Bridges, but after you see Don Johnson doing it, it’s hard to see anyone else.

[20:12] Marlon: Right, so they wanted Jeff Bridges, they even thought about having Mark Harmon as Sonny Crockett.

[20:22] Bobby: I could see that.

[20:24] Marlon: And so what happened is, he actually hit off pretty well with the producers and they say, “You know what, we’re gonna go with him.” But here’s another trivia, there was two guys up for the job, it was Don Johnson, and do you remember Larry Wilcox?

[20:42] Jason: I know the name, I’d know his face if I saw him.

[20:45] Marlon: He was the blond-haired guy from CHiPs.

[20:50] Jason: Oh, yeah, Larry, now Ponch and what was the other guy’s name?

[20:54] Bobby: Ponch and-

[20:56] Jason: Ponch.

[20:56] Marlon: Ponch and Larry, there you go. I watched CHiPs, I’m sorry guys. But anyway, yeah, it was Don Johnson and Larry Wilcox, and what happened is they decided not to go with Larry Wilcox because he just did CHiPs. They didn’t wanna have another guy who did a cop show previous to this.

[21:15] Jason: And be kinda typecast.

[21:17] Marlon: So Don Johnson won the job.

[21:20] Bobby: And the rest is history.

[21:21] Jason: So there you go, party people, Marlon knows Miami Vice.

[21:26] Bobby: He knows it backwards and forwards.

[21:27] Jason: And stuff that you couldn’t even imagine or remember. We’ve come to that part in the program known as the show moment.

[21:40] Bobby: Oh yeah, Marlon, you got that.

[21:41] Jason: You got it, you’re right in there, so sexy, the show.

[21:44] Bobby: So today’s topic is Bob?

[21:49] Jason: Oh, you’re coming to me. You’re talking to me.

[21:52] Bobby: I’m talking to you, we’re gonna see, what part of the show didn’t you like, was there something that just got under your skin?

[21:57] Jason: Yeah, and this was requested by Anna.

[22:04] Bobby: Yeah, Anna.

[22:05] Jason: So what we’re gonna do is, Marlon, let’s start with you. What part of the show didn’t you like? When you think about it you’re like, “Ugh.”

[22:15] Marlon: Okay, so, thinking back, and this is gonna be really good facts for people that really like the show. Sometimes we taped every day, and every time on Saturday we would tape something like six to eight shows every Saturday. And to me that was such a grueling, tough day, because of course we’re having fun dancing, but there’s downtime, and then you gotta get back up and do the show all over again. So that to me was a little tough to do.

[22:50] Bobby: It was a grind, I mean, we had to bring our clothes in a suitcase, we had to change for each episode, and it was difficult.

[22:59] Jason: Right, we had to swap clothes, but not only that, after the seventh episode you’d still have to be up-

[23:05] Bobby: And excited, you had to keep that energy up.

[23:08] Marlon: Right, and that’s another thing too, it’s a good point you make, is that there’s the dancing aspect of it, but there’s also keeping your energy up, and happy, and giddy, they wanted a lot of happiness, they wanted to show that visually on the show. So you had to maintain that from, I believe we got there at 8:00 in the morning, it was pretty early, and we didn’t wrap up till 5:00, 6:00.

[23:32] Bobby: Yeah, it was a long day, and we had to deal with that little bathroom, changing clothes.

[23:39] Jason: Yeah, I think we actually have a picture of us in the bathroom getting changed or something like that.

[23:43] Bobby: I’ve seen that one.

[23:44] Jason: You saw that one?

[23:45] Bobby: What about you, Jason?

[23:46] Jason: I would say one of the things was the no playing to the camera rule, that they would selectively enforce.

[23:54] Bobby: What are you talking about?

[23:54] Jason: I know, like, I had no idea, obviously we never played to the camera ever, never, not at all. But every once in a while, a couple months would go by, and then something would happen, and they would kinda make examples out of certain people.

[24:14] Bobby: You know, though, the moments that we got together and jumped around, played to the camera, they were the best moments for me.

[24:20] Jason: Yeah, they were, well, for me too.

[24:22] Marlon: And when you guys picked me up and Peter tossed me like a trophy, that to me is going back on some fun times.

[24:32] Bobby: Yeah man, that’s classic.

[24:33] Jason: So there’s my part that I really didn’t like so much, selective enforcement.

[24:38] Bobby: Yeah, well, I got one for you, I know you’ll both remember this, every time they would play that song Lean On Me-

[24:46] Jason: Oh my God.

[24:47] Bobby: And then we were required to all do the Lean On Me dance.

[24:52] Jason: Ugh.

[24:53] Bobby: And oh man, I hated that.

[24:55] Jason: I still can’t listen to that song, I gotta be honest with you, honest to God, I still can’t listen to it.

[25:00] Marlon: I still have bad dreams of hearing that song and doing that happy dance, I don’t know if I can put visuals to it, but it was a little daunting.

[25:13] Jason: It was anything but happy though, let’s be honest, Mar, it was anything but happy.

[25:49] Jason: You know, when that first came out, I thought to myself, all this shit’s gonna sound like from 1989, oh my God, everything’s coming back.

[25:56] Bobby: Well, here’s the thing, the reason why I think she named it, because she was born in 1989. So there you go, pretty simple. But it’s not that I’m a big fan of Taylor, the fact that it was 1989, I wanted to share with you a few things that happened in 1989.

[26:14] Jason: That was a good year, I had a good time in that year, one thing that sticks out in my head was that was when I first went to LA for a couple long extended periods of time.

[26:22] Bobby: Yeah, at that point you were done with the show, right?

[26:24] Jason: Yeah, I left the show in 1989, and that summer I went out there, and I was actually on Bandstand a couple times, there’s a picture.

[26:31] Bobby: I saw some of that.

[26:32] Jason: What about you? Your personal 1989.

[26:34] Bobby: I had came back to the show, and I was hosting with Princess.

[26:40] Jason: What about you, Marlon?

[26:42] Marlon: Yeah, I think I was gone, I left the show and moved on.

[26:44] Jason: Did anything happen to you in ’89? Anything big?

[26:48] Marlon: Um, no, not particularly, just, I was trying to study music, and trying to find myself in a sense, so I was just moving on.

[26:57] Bobby: Well, here’s some things that did happen in 1989, and I’m sure you guys remember all these. The B-52’s and that famous song The Love Shack.

[27:10] Jason: I can’t help it, I’m doing the dance now, guys.

[27:15] Bobby: But let me tell you, that song they played so much on the radio, it was worn out.

[27:23] Marlon: And what’s really interesting about the B-52’s is that they were a band from Athens, Georgia, and they were really on the underground scene, and that song put them on the map pretty much, on a commercial tip.

[27:41] Bobby: There you go, perfect. Here’s another one, I’m a big fan of this show, 1989, the world was introduced to that animated family, The Simpsons.

[27:56] Bobby: Yes, 1989 is when The Simpsons premiered, and it’s still going.
