[00:35] Bobby: So how you feeling, Jason, everything going good?

[00:37] Jason: Everything’s all right man, I’m a little sluggish here, I feel a little hungover, but I’m gonna power through here.

[00:43] Bobby: Well, we are on episode number 11, can you say that in Spanish for the peeps?

[00:47] Jason: I can’t, dude, I can’t.

[01:07] Jason: Yeah, the unnamed hacker, I like the way you went off on that.

[01:09] Bobby: Yeah, the hacker who harassed that poor actress, Leslie Jones, from Ghostbusters.

[01:16] Bobby: I think we’re gonna have a new jackass soon for you, so just stay tuned, and today we have a special guest.

[01:22] Jason: Yes we do, but we’re gonna save it to show ya.

[01:26] Bobby: And we’ll tell you a little hint, it’s a female.

[01:38] Bobby: Anyway, what else?

[01:40] Jason: We can dress until the dawn, making love till Jerry’s gone.

[01:44] Bobby: Oh man, I think you gave too many hints. And we also, what else did we talk about, we did the whole ice cream deal.

[01:51] Jason: Yes we did.

[01:52] Bobby: Yeah man, that was fun, I was enjoying that. Everybody on Facebook was commenting their favorite ice cream to go grab from the Good Humor man or the Mister Softee dude.

[01:55] Jason: Just made me have to get back on that treadmill a little bit more from eating all the ice cream during the week.

[02:08] Bobby: I’ll tell you what, as soon as we were finished, I definitely went and had myself a little treat.

[02:13] Jason: Yes, that’s what you get, you think about all the good stuff, it’s like when we talk about the old ’80s shows, you wanna pop on and watch a little TV Land, check out the old stuff. Ice cream, same way.

[02:24] Bobby: So let me tell you, this past weekend I went to see a show called Absinthe at Caesars Palace, and if anybody’s walked past Caesars Palace you’ll notice a tent that’s built outside right next to the valet.

[02:38] Jason: That’s what that is, I didn’t know that.

[02:40] Bobby: And this show, I highly recommend it, it’s not quite a normal circus, it’s not Ringling Brothers, trust me, it’s very adult, very risque, there’s a little burlesque, and so much comedy, but it’s one of my favorite shows now. I’ve seen a lot of shows in Vegas, and I gotta put this in my top three.

[03:01] Jason: Oh, that’s high praise, bro.

[03:03] Bobby: So I highly recommend anybody visiting Las Vegas go check this show, but here’s a little news, the show’s leaving Caesars, and it’s going over to the Cosmopolitan.

[03:13] Bobby: So you could grab a slice at, what’s that place?

[03:15] Jason: Secret Pizza.

[03:16] Bobby: Grab a slice at Secret Pizza, then go see the show, man.

[03:19] Jason: I think I’m gonna take the wife down to see that based on your recommendation, I’ve seen the billboards for it but just never had a chance to check it out.

[03:26] Bobby: Yeah man, it’s great.

[03:27] Jason: So here’s another little moment from the wife, they announced the new Bachelor.

[03:33] Bobby: Woo, oh man, the Bachelor moment.

[03:35] Jason: Nick.

[03:37] Bobby: I can tell you, I’m in the dark, so Jason’s educating me here.

[03:39] Jason: I know everybody out there, our listeners, is gonna appreciate it. Nick was a real dick for a long time, at least, I’ve only seen like two or three seasons or whatever, like Jojo and Ben and whatnot, I can’t even believe I know this crap, but I know our listeners appreciate it.

[03:57] Jason: Yeah, Nick man, he seemed to be all right in this, dude, you have to watch this Bachelor in Paradise thing, it’s nuts.

[04:02] Bobby: Is he sort of a jackass?

[04:04] Jason: No, he’s actually the older guy on there, he’s like 35 years old, so you’re kinda rooting for him. But yeah, in the end, Nick is the new Bachelor, that was kind of a surprise, so there’s my little Bachelor moment.

[04:15] Bobby: So I have some big news, and I think this is, Jason’s gonna love this news.

[04:20] Jason: Okay, let’s go.

[04:20] Bobby: Are you ready? Are you ready?

[04:22] Jason: Give it to me, brother.

[04:23] Bobby: Okay, so you know we’re big fans here of Stranger Things at Netflix, the show there about the throwback to the ’80s themes.

[04:31] Jason: What a great show.

[04:32] Bobby: Well, the success, it’s been overwhelming, the show has really done well, so they just renewed it for season two.

[04:39] Bobby: Stranger Things is coming back, and yeah man, I know you’re excited.

[04:42] Jason: I’m excited, I love it, in fact, it’s so cool you said that, Jimmy Fallon just the other night had the whole crew on there, they had the whole cast.

[04:51] Jason: Those kids are just like, they’re like the kinda kids you wanna hang out with, like Goonies kids. If everybody out there who’s seen it, you know exactly what I’m talking about, but that’s good news.

[05:00] Bobby: You know what’s awesome? How this show has changed the lives of those kids, one day you’re just sitting at home a normal kid, and next thing you’re starring on Stranger Things on Netflix.

[05:09] Jason: And you’re a great actor, like natural inherent acting ability, I mean like when you’re 10 years old, how the hell, you know what I’m saying, they pretend, it’s amazing.

[05:18] Bobby: So if anybody hasn’t checked out Stranger Things, Bobby and Jason’s Awesome ’80s Podcast highly recommends you go see it.

To me, I don’t understand, the guy has the world by the balls from way back when with the Rihanna thing, he’s in every song, he’s a great singer, he’s a great performer, very talented, but what the hell’s wrong with this guy? This guy has got, you heard the term, it’s like for Colin Kaepernick, he’s got a million dollar arm and a nickel head.

[06:09] Bobby: So wait, you must be talking about the news last week about, apparently at his home in California the police were outside and he was holed up inside, right? You’re talking about that.

[06:22] Jason: Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m talking about.

[06:23] Bobby: Well, there’s a little backstory. The girl who came out running out, Chris Brown claims that she stole from him, and he was just reacting to that situation. I don’t know what’s true or not, it’s a little fuzzy.

[06:39] Bobby: But I do know that the girl involved is former Miss California, and she’s been in some hot water herself, she actually lost her crown, man. So she’s not exactly a person of high standards.

[06:52] Jason: Well, you know what, I’m gonna believe her anyway, ’cause screw this guy.

[06:55] Bobby: All right? So there you go folks, the Jackass of the Week.

[06:58] Jason: It was just Chris Brown just annoying, I mean come on, stop being a stunod, you got the world by the short hairs, dude, I mean come on man.

[07:08] Bobby: By the balls.

[07:08] Jason: That’s right, by the balls, baby, the balls.

[07:12] Bobby: So Jason, we were teasing a little earlier that we have a special guest.

[07:16] Jason: Yes.

[07:17] Bobby: Very special guest.

[07:18] Jason: Very special, someone who knows where all the bodies are buried.

[07:20] Bobby: She knows where all those bodies are buried. Yes, she’s a very good friend of the show, and of ours.

[07:26] Jason: And a long lifetime friend here.

[07:28] Bobby: Yeah, and we love her, and her name is Heather Day.

[07:33] Jason: Otherwise known as-

[07:34] Bobby: Princess. Hey girl, hey, what’s up? How you doing?

[07:39] Heather: Hey, how are you?

[07:40] Bobby: Good, we’re good, we’re here in Las Vegas, and you’re back there in Philly.

[07:43] Heather: I know, but you know what, I wore my Vegas shirt.

[07:48] Bobby: There you go. You guys can’t see this, but she looks great, wearing a little Vegas there. You know, Heather, you look damn good.

[07:54] Jason: You look great, time has been great to you, girl.

[07:58] Bobby: Yeah, me too. You know what’s funny, look at you guys. So yeah, I follow you on Facebook, and I notice you’re always posting dancing and dance videos, you’re doing that whole thing now, right?

[08:10] Heather: Oh yeah, yeah, so I’m still dancing, can’t take the dance out of Princess.

[08:15] Heather: I have a couple of dance studios, I guess you can say, I really like to call it alternative fitness.

[08:24] Heather: And so do you wanna explain what I do?

[08:26] Jason: Yes.

[08:27] Bobby: Uh, yes, tell us, tell us, well I kinda know, there’s definitely a pole involved, but it’s not what you think, it’s actually pretty awesome and you could explain it better.

[08:38] Bobby: So tell us.

[08:40] Heather: So yes, I own two pole dance fitness studios, but we don’t just do pole dance fitness. And most people at this point, I hope, have not been living under a rock and still think that pole holds that stigma that it did years ago, with it just being associated with strip clubs or anything like that. So we’ve kind of broken that glass ceiling, so to speak, and it’s more of an art form, very athletic, very graceful, we do it in a professional environment, there’s no tipping for us. People come to my studio to get in shape, to feel empowered, and that’s what we do.

[09:26] Heather: We also do aerials, like Cirque du Soleil type of aerial-

[09:30] Jason: That’s like the hoops from the ceiling, right, aerial type of stuff like that?

[09:33] Heather: So yeah, like the hanging hoop or the silks, and the aerial hammock, we do aerial yoga, we do acro.

[09:43] Bobby: That’s some serious stuff you got going on there.

[09:46] Bobby: Heather’s body, she’s rock hard, you are, you are, you’re in great shape.

[09:52] Jason: Well, it doesn’t surprise you, anybody who watched the show knows, her saying this right now-

[09:56] Bobby: And I’m surprised, you know what, if I ever come to your gym, I gotta let it rain, I’m sorry, I’m gonna let it rain.

[10:01] Jason: No, I want to see you put him up on one of them hoops, that’s what I wanna see.

[10:05] Bobby: Oh, we should do that.

[10:07] Heather: Yeah, next time you’re in Philly, you gotta come by.

[10:11] Bobby: I do, I do. So let’s take it back, let’s go back in time.

[10:15] Jason: Back in time.

[10:16] Bobby: Because that’s what we do here, we are the Awesome ’80s podcast, so we have to take it back. Talk to us about the show, how you became a regular on the show, what year did you start?

[10:28] Heather: Oh gosh, I’m really bad with dates, I wanna say it was probably ’85, so it was the last year that Dance Monster was on.

[10:39] Bobby: So how were you discovered? Like did somebody give you a pass? How did it work?

[10:49] Heather: Okay, so there was this teen dance club called Pulsations out in the town that I lived in. I would go there for teen night every Sunday night, and I’d get all dressed up, and they would allow us, like certain people, I guess they felt that were good dancers or whatever, got the crowd going, to dance on these particular speakers.

[11:13] Heather: So that was my thing, that was my passion.

[11:15] Bobby: Oh wait, wait, wait, wait, you were on one of the speakers, you were a speaker dancer at Pulsations? ‘Cause I used to go there, man.

[11:21] Jason: Wow, that was a big deal back then, that was a big deal.

[11:24] Bobby: No, I used to go to Pulsations, I can’t believe you were actually one of the girls up on the speakers.

[11:28] Jason: That’s so cool.

[11:29] Bobby: I was. I was. That’s sweet.

[11:30] Jason: Now, were you princessed out at that point? Were you starting to get into it? Were you dressed up like that at all?

[11:36] Heather: Oh yeah, I was definitely dressed up at that point, and I think that’s why the scouts, so they, the producers would send out scouts to some of these teen dance clubs to find new dancers for the show.

[11:50] Heather: At the time, I think Rennie was there, the day that I got scouted, so to speak, and they came up to me, approached me, to ask me if I wanted to come on. Now, the only reason I came on was because every time Dance On Air regulars came to Pulsations, they were allowed to get up on the speakers-

[12:16] Bobby: Oh, so they had that special treatment, you got the boot.

[12:19] Heather: So I was mad, I was like, “What are these kids coming on just ’cause they’re on TV, I’m getting kicked off the speaker.” So when they came and they offered me tickets, so I was like, “Yeah,” ’cause now I can say, “You’re not kicking me off the speaker.”

[12:36] Bobby: “You want me on? Yeah, sure.” That’s great, that’s awesome, that’s a great story, I didn’t know any of that.

[12:41] Heather: Just for me to go on the show. But once I got there to the show, and actually the first taping I was so nervous going to the studio, and I think we all kind of felt that way, and you’re standing outside Channel 17 in line waiting for the VPs to get in.

[12:58] Heather: And once I got in, when I was in that line waiting, I was wearing like lace pants, like these pink lace pants, and I heard the people around me go, “Oh my gosh, she’s gonna wear her underwear on TV.”

[13:16] Bobby: Hey man, you know what, you were so unique, you’re very unique and you did your thing, you weren’t worried about what people were thinking.

[13:23] Jason: And the lace pants at that point, ’cause I was a pretty big Prince head myself back in the day, like Controversy, I had Dirty Mind, the Dirty Mind LP, I had all that stuff from back in the day, so her wearing that stuff was completely normal, if you were into that.

[13:40] Bobby: Let me ask you about the famous teardrop, when did that start?

[13:46] Heather: Um, that started immediately. I was wearing it for a while, but I think the story about me not removing it until I met Prince was something that just kind of developed during the course of the show, the very first couple of months I was on the show. So the first show I said my name was Heather, we did a roll call, and I came up and was like, “I’m Heather.” And after that everybody started calling me Princess on the show, and I was like, “All right, I’m gonna adopt this name, it’s cool.”

[14:23] Heather: It served me well to keep my private life kind of private for a long period of time. It wasn’t until probably the show was over that even some of the dancers and regulars of the show knew my real name. So it served its purpose at the time, and now people I guess know my real name’s Heather.

[14:51] Bobby: That’s fine, it’s not a secret, her name is Heather Day.

[14:54] Jason: Do you remember who you used to dance with in the beginning?

[14:57] Heather: Yeah, actually the first guy who danced with me, and of course you wanted to be, when you dance on a show, you either wanted to be on the risers or you wanted to be on the perimeter of the dance floor, ’cause that was where most of the cameras shot mostly.

[15:12] Heather: And everybody in the middle was like this sea of bodies, that’s about it.

[15:17] Jason: Yeah, that’s perfect, that’s true, you’re totally right.

[15:23] Heather: Do you guys remember Michael Hickey?

[15:25] Jason: Yeah, I know, yeah, I do remember Michael Hickey.

[15:27] Bobby: Yeah, I do remember him.

[15:29] Heather: So he asked me to dance, and I knew he was out on the perimeter, so he was the first dance partner that I had. But after him, I mean, I danced with all you guys.

[15:41] Heather: And we would go in there, do you remember, going in, we’d have, say, five shows we’d have to tape, so we’d go around, and we’d say, “Oh, I’ll dance with you first show. I’ll dance with you second show.” “I’ll dance with you third show.” So we’d line our dance partners up before the show started taping, and you kinda knew who you were gonna dance with. But of course, Romeo and Bobby Vandell, who’s Bobby Jones, Terry Callaway.

[16:13] Bobby: You had a lot of different partners.

[16:16] Bobby: What’s that? You had a lot of different partners, I mean, you were there many years.

[16:20] Jason: And everybody you danced with always danced well like you, that was one thing, you know what I’m saying, you guys always really complimented each other, for sure, from all the tapes that Bob and I have dusted off.

[16:31] Bobby: Princess, what was some of your favorite moments from the show?

[16:46] Heather: Moments? God, there were so many. And it’s so crazy that you forget so much. I don’t know if you guys ever looked back at some of these tapes and go, “What? Did that really happen?”

[17:00] Heather: “Was I really dancing like that?” “Was my hair really like that? Oh my God.” There’s just moments you forget.

[17:21] Jason: And I personally, for my mental health, appreciate having a chance to talk to you.

[17:28] Jason: Because you, I’m hosting this little garage band, garage podcast with Bob, and you had an opportunity to host with him every day on TV, it drives me to drink a little bit, a little bit of Sam Adams now and then. So I’d like to know how exactly you got through it. And you don’t have to be nice.

[17:52] Heather: Well, you know, I don’t know if you know this Jason, but I’ve never drank.

[17:59] Jason: Bad princess. No, good for you, good for you, good for you.

[18:04] Heather: It’s the truth. And as far as my experience co-hosting with Bobby, it was fantastic. I have no dirt to-

[18:15] Jason: I’m so disappointed, you just broke my heart.

[18:17] Bobby: And I didn’t pay her to say that.

[18:18] Jason: See, I was looking for something.

[18:21] Heather: Bobby was very professional. I know we used to tease each other a lot on the air, and we didn’t really hang out much. Like, we would go there, do our job, and it wasn’t like we hung out and chatted at lunch.

[18:38] Heather: So Bobby and I were cool, but we weren’t like buddy-buddies, we saved that for the air, I think. So the chemistry that you saw between us was real and valid, but it was just that we weren’t like-

[18:58] Heather: There was, and Bobby had so many great female fans that, you know, probably jealous of my position as his cohost.

[19:11] Jason: Oh, no.

[19:12] Heather: Even if I wanted to, like, get together with Bobby, I probably would have to stand in line behind-

[19:21] Jason: Oh, come on, come on, look at that, look at him blushing.

[19:23] Bobby: Heather, I will send you that $100 tomorrow.

[19:27] Jason: See, now, I remember, one thing when we were running around being knuckleheads, you were always cool, you know what I’m saying, on the show, you’re old school, you’re Heather, always considered a friend, always chill.

[19:38] Bobby: Always chill.

[19:38] Jason: And you hosting with him, I had left the show by that time, and you doing that, you guys just looked, to his credit, I’m gonna give you a little dirt here that he said. He has said to me on several different occasions that he doesn’t know sometimes how you put up with him, because he would just go off the rails, and you would be real pro, and he would walk around with like a duck, like this, and just not say anything or act-

[20:05] Bobby: You know, that was part of our chemistry, she would be reading the cue cards, doing her thing, and I would try to bother her, and she never, to your credit, you never got flustered, you never got flustered, you’re awesome, you were.

[20:20] Heather: Well, thank you, I kinda do remember you doing that, but it was just, you were just testing me.

[20:26] Bobby: Exactly, exactly.

[20:28] Heather: As professional as I could be.

[20:31] Bobby: And you always were. Do you remember the show where we were dressing up and it was the Smalls formal wear, and you had that beautiful dress, and I had my tux on. You remember that?

[20:41] Heather: Uh, yeah, but beautiful dress, definitely not my thing. Those were dresses, okay?

[20:51] Heather: Wait, so you see those posters and you see my face, it’s like a forced smile. Like, what am I doing in this dress, right?

[20:59] Bobby: Yep, we’re talking about the Smalls Formal Wear, we used to do a lot of promotions with them, and posters and all that stuff.

[21:07] Heather: Yeah, but you know what, I ended up, I wore it to my prom actually. It was at Huk’s, so.

[21:13] Bobby: Oh, cool. Princess, do you remember, I remember some big moments when we were hosting, having the New Kids on the Block, they came on many times and I think we were really lucky in those few years that we were hosting, we saw some great acts coming and going, and it was pretty cool.

[21:34] Heather: Yeah, it was, it was very cool. Do you have some favorites?

[21:37] Bobby: I talked about in a past podcast, do you remember the big contest we had where a viewer got to go see the New Kids on the Block in concert in Long Island? Do you remember that?

[21:49] Heather: Mm-hmm, yeah.

[21:50] Bobby: And Liz Jacobs went, and then another person went, and I escorted them. That was a lot of fun, because doing the remotes, I mean, you remember doing remotes, they were probably the most fun, to get out of that little studio was, felt good.

[22:04] Heather: Yeah, definitely, I know we did the boat tour, whatever, the boat with New Kids on the Block and all that.

[22:13] Bobby: That’s right, Donnie Wahlberg, yes, I remember that.

[22:14] Jason: So what exactly was that?

[22:16] Bobby: We were on the river, right, it was a riverboat in Philadelphia.

[22:21] Heather: It was on the Schuylkill River.

[22:23] Bobby: On the Schuylkill. You know, that Schuylkill’s very clean, you could see the bottom.

[22:30] Heather: If you don’t know the Schuylkill River, it’s probably like one of the most polluted, dirty-

[22:34] Bobby: Oh man.

[22:36] Bobby: It’s nasty, it’s pretty bad. But yeah, the boat, we had New Kids on the Block, and Princess and I were doing some interviews. And Cindy Stark, you remember Cindy?

[22:48] Heather: Yeah.

[22:48] Bobby: She was there, and Chris Bustard, they were there.

[22:51] Heather: You know, Cindy came to one of my studio’s recitals over the last couple years, she showed up as a surprise.

[22:57] Bobby: She’s awesome, I always loved her energy, and she was always so happy.

[23:01] Jason: Yeah, she was great.

[23:02] Bobby: Her family was always very friendly to me, I even went to her house a couple times for dinner, very, very cool chick.

[23:08] Jason: Yeah, her parents are really cool. Speaking of parents, your dad, I talked about this on one of the podcasts, do you remember when we went and stayed out for Love Sexy tickets in my tent, me, my brother, your dad, yeah, you remember that?

[23:23] Heather: I didn’t realize that was your tent.

[23:25] Jason: That was my- so that was his tent.

[23:26] Bobby: How was it like being in a tent with Jason, man, geez, how’d you do that?

[23:31] Jason: It was, we stayed up all night ’cause it was our first, I don’t know about you, but that was my first night out, that was the first one I ever did. And I do remember your pops and my brother, and there was, everybody there was all Prince people. So I remember that, that was my first, we were talking about our first experiences, and it was with you.

[23:49] Heather: Yeah, I didn’t remember that.

[23:51] Bobby: There you go. Speaking of Prince, he just passed away recently, how did you feel? I know that you got a lot of your fans came out and supported you, how did you feel about it, and how do you feel about it today?

[24:07] Heather: Well, of course it was devastating, I’m still in shock about it. I don’t know that I’ve completely digested the idea of it. For a long period of time I was really kind of in a weird space, mentally, because I think that he had such a big, he was such a big part of my teenage years into adulthood, and even currently.

[24:43] Heather: I still listen to his music, I still watch videos, I’m still a huge fan, and the only good thing about it was that it was interesting, there were so many people that reached out to me when he passed that said, “Oh my gosh, you were the first person I thought of.”

[25:07] Heather: On my Facebook fan page, it just blew up that week because people were like, “Oh my gosh, I hope you’re doing okay,” and “I know this must be so difficult for you,” and that outpouring of love and support was just amazing. I was like, wow, I didn’t realize I had this many, quote-unquote, “friends” out there that are thinking of me in this really sad moment, in this sad time. So yeah, it’s crazy, I can’t believe it, the cause of his death, can’t believe all that, it’s just so hard to digest.

[25:50] Bobby: It’s sad, it’s very sad.

[25:52] Jason: Very sad, it’s crazy.

[25:53] Bobby: He’s, he was such a talent, he really was.

[25:56] Jason: Now, you met him once, didn’t you? Didn’t you meet him once?

[26:00] Bobby: Yeah, he was, almost, right?

[26:01] Heather: So if anybody out there knows Prince, and I think all these stories are coming out now of what kind of a person he is and how reclusive he was, he was probably even more reclusive than Michael Jackson. Well, he came to Philly, of course, being the huge fan that I was, I went to every single concert I could. And so I went to the concert and he had an after concert party at a local club, and actually one of our fellow regulars happened to work security at this club.

[26:34] Heather: So she kinda snuck me into the VIP room where he was for this after concert. And there was only probably about 100 people in this room, including the DJ, and there was a bar there. And I went up to the bar and I was so freaked, I was looking all around.

[26:59] Heather: Prince is in this room right now, and I have to be only 50 feet from him somewhere. So I’m turning around backwards and forwards, and I had a girlfriend with me that I brought, and she’s a real pretty girl, and she was standing next to me. Well, I look and I’m turning around, and all of a sudden I bump into somebody, like shoulder-to-shoulder kinda thing.

[27:20] Heather: And I turn around to say, “Sorry,” or, “Excuse me,” and here it was Prince.

[27:25] Bobby: Wow, wow, that’s awesome, that’s awesome.

[27:31] Heather: He didn’t even turn around, ’cause his back was kinda like facing me, or his shoulder. And then behind him was his security guard. So once I opened my mouth to say excuse me and I saw who it was, I nearly peed my pants.

[27:50] Bobby: That’s great. So let me ask you, were you taller than Prince at the time?

[27:57] Jason: Oh yeah.

[27:58] Heather: Oh yeah.

[27:59] Bobby: Oh yeah, everybody was, right?

[28:01] Jason: Well, maybe not you.

[28:03] Bobby: Oh shit.

[28:05] Heather: So his bouncer gave me a look, and he was like, “That wasn’t cool,” kind of.

[28:12] Heather: And after that I just stood next to him, like shoulder-to-shoulder. Literally, I was inspecting his ear ’cause he was so close to me.

[28:24] Heather: And I was going, “Oh my God, this is my moment, what am I gonna say to him, I’ve lived my whole life for this moment, to talk to Prince.” And so I went to grab his sleeve to get his attention, ’cause he wasn’t looking at me, and the bodyguard gets in my face and is wagging his finger like, “No, no, no, no.”

[28:45] Bobby: Oh man, oh, it’s your moment, so close, it’s your moment.

[28:51] Heather: I know, so I knew, the unwritten, or spoken rule, and I’ve known this from just reading about Prince, was like you don’t speak to him unless he speaks to you. I would’ve been kicked out if I had literally grabbed his sleeve and said, “Hey, I’m your biggest fan,” whatever I was gonna say. So I withheld and I just was like, “Oh God, just stay in the moment here.”

[29:13] Heather: Well, he ended up leaning in front of me and actually putting his head in front of my head and poking my friend, my girlfriend that I brought, and he started talking to her.

[29:36] Bobby: Oh no, I can’t believe that.

[29:38] Heather: Totally ignored me, and starts introducing this girl that he’s talking to, to my girlfriend, I don’t know for what purpose, but I’m just looking at his ear, and he had that ear. And of course we didn’t have cell phones at that time or I would’ve been taking a whole bunch of pictures of his ear.

[30:01] Bobby: That’s crazy, that is a crazy story. Well, you got up close and personal with that ear, you definitely did.

[30:10] Jason: And you know, anybody else but you saying something like that, you would think they were, it was really nuts, but listening to her say it, that was, I mean, about Prince, yeah.

[30:18] Bobby: I’ve never heard that story, so for me it was great, it was great. Let me ask you a question. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but they’re gonna start tours in October of Paisley Park, how do you feel about that? Are you gonna make a pilgrimage or are you gonna go check it out?

[30:33] Heather: It’s so funny, I don’t think that it’s, I think it’s too early to do something like that.

[30:34] Bobby: I agree with you, I do, it’s too fresh.

[30:34] Heather: I know that some of the people that are very close to him also believe it’s too early to start that. I mean, I can understand and I would definitely make the pilgrimage at some point to see it, but out of respect for him, I don’t know, it’s just too soon. I think it just kind of seems a little tawdry to go in, I don’t really agree with that right now.

[31:05] Heather: But I was just looking before I got on here with you guys, I was looking through some old VHS tapes and I found my pilgrimage, my high school pilgrimage to Minnesota in Minneapolis, where I went to see his Lovesexy, see him kick off his Lovesexy tour in his hometown of Minneapolis.

[31:38] Heather: So that was awesome, and I visited a whole bunch of his favorite spots and First Avenue, and went to his father’s house, it was his previous home, which was purple, went to Paisley Park, the whole bit. So it’s kind of funny that you’re asking me about that because I have video footage of that now.

[32:00] Jason: You got video footage of that? That is awesome, that is awesome, I’d love to see that.

[32:04] Bobby: You are a true fan, 100%. How many times do you think you saw Prince live?

[32:13] Heather: Not enough.

[32:14] Jason: Did you see him at the Electric Factory, when he played the Electric Factory?

[32:17] Bobby: I saw that one too, I was at that one. See, and the thing is, with Heather, Princess, to everybody back then, the same way it is, kinda like with what you and I did with the Wham thing, everybody who grew up associates her, who watched TV, with Prince.

[32:36] Jason: In their heads, Princess and Prince live on the same street or in the same apartment building, they know each other, they’re besties, they’re connected. So for people to reach out to you, just to cycle back to what you brought up, about everybody sending their love and well wishes for you and concern for you, it’s because you see, in their head, even in my head when I think about you, I think about Prince.

[32:59] Bobby: The first thing I thought about when he passed away was you.

[33:03] Jason: Yeah, me too.

[33:04] Bobby: And I even made you a little video, do you remember seeing it?

[33:07] Heather: Yeah, so we had a little kind of Prince afterlife after party, locally here, and my boyfriend had gathered some videos from some of the former regulars, and everybody sent their well wishes, individual videos. It was so touching, and I wish everybody could’ve been there in Philly, but it was the next best thing, and it was much appreciated, and I love you guys all for doing that for me.

[33:43] Bobby: Well, we love you, you know that.

[33:44] Jason: Yes we do.

[33:45] Bobby: You know.

[33:46] Jason: You’re a part of everything, we can’t look back on our lives and not think about you.

[33:50] Bobby: And remember, you’re our first guest on the Awesome 80s podcast, so that’s special.

[33:55] Jason: That is special, you were the first one, and when we were sitting here talking, it was like, “We gotta get Heather.”

[34:01] Bobby: Princess.

[34:02] Jason: Princess, yeah.

[34:02] Bobby: What do you think about the podcast? Have you listened to some of the previous episodes?

[34:08] Heather: Yeah, I have, I’ve been enjoying them, they’re extremely entertaining, and I think you guys are doing a fabulous job reminiscing about the ’80s and topics, and it’s different because, as adults now, we can actually say things that were, would’ve been censored back in the ’80s.

[34:26] Bobby: Yes, it’s true, it’s true.

[34:29] Heather: It’s not a family show anymore.

[34:32] Bobby: No, it’s not. And then, you know what’s cool, when we talk about the ’80s, it jogs your memory, it jogs everybody’s memory, and we all kind of remember the things that we forgot.

[34:42] Jason: Yeah, the things we forgot, and the things that, as we get older, we all appreciate and look at it in a different light now, how special it was.

[34:49] Bobby: How did you feel growing up in the ’80s, being a teenager, being on the show? For me, it was a great decade, what did you think?

[34:59] Heather: Oh yeah, for sure, best, some of the best times of my life, during the ’80s. The music, obviously, being able to grow up with Prince music-

[35:11] Heather: And also George Michael and-

[35:16] Jason: Wham! We gotta give that, there you go, there you go, that’s right, that’s right. So you know what, you look almost exactly the same, I look at you, and that’s her right there. How often do you get recognized? ‘Cause I know you’re still in Philly, does that happen? It’s gotta happen to you here and there.

[35:31] Heather: Yeah, I mean, I’ve gotten recognized throughout the years, it freaks my daughters out a bit. Well sometimes, somebody, I’ll just be talking about, randomly the show comes up. Oh, I know why, because my email has the words Dancing on Air on it.

[35:52] Heather: If I fill out something or somebody asks for the email, and it doesn’t matter, it could be somebody across the country who’s asking me, “Okay, what’s your email?” I give that and they’re like, “Oh, I remember that show.” So then the conversation starts and like, “Oh, you were a princess? Oh my gosh.” So it is crazy that people are still looking back at the show and reminiscing and still have good feelings about it.

[36:22] Bobby: So you mentioned you have two daughters, what’s it like being a mom?

[36:28] Heather: It’s tough being a mom, but it is, as everybody says, it’s the old cliche, it’s like the best job in the world, most important job in the world. I would say that my children are definitely my greatest accomplishment.

[36:44] Heather: It’s so challenging and so rewarding at the same time, the cliches are true.

[36:56] Bobby: How old are your girls?

[36:59] Heather: I have a 10-year-old and a 13-year-old.

[37:01] Bobby: So have they seen any of your tapes from the ’80s, you hosting, you dancing, your lip syncs? Have they seen them?

[37:07] Jason: Yeah, what do they think?

[37:08] Heather: Oh yeah, they’ve seen them. It depends on what age they were, so when they were younger and they would see tapes they’re like, “Oh my gosh, Mom, was that you on TV?” They’re amazed. And then as they’ve gotten older and they have their own style tastes and stuff like that-

[37:31] Heather: Now they’re like, “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe you wore that,” “Your hair looked like that?” “This is so strange, I can’t believe the ’80s,” they can’t believe the ’80s fashions and things like that.

[37:41] Heather: But on the other hand, for me in particular, I have a 13-year-old daughter and she’s quite precocious, she’s a very pretty girl, and she wants to wear makeup and all this. I have no room to talk when she wants to put on like heavy eyeliner or something like that, although she’s only 13 and I was at least, what, 15 when I was on the show?

[38:04] Bobby: Correct, 14, 15 years old.

[38:04] Heather: But if she wants to wear something that’s a little different, or like a crop top or something like that-

[38:19] Jason: You got no ground to stand on.

[38:21] Bobby: She wants, I have no room to talk, you really don’t.

[38:22] Heather: You do not have any room to talk, ’cause you pushed the envelope and you set your own style.

[38:32] Bobby: So, man, I had a good time.

[38:36] Jason: Yeah, I had a great time talking, would you come back on and do it again?

[38:40] Bobby: Absolutely. Yeah, this was great catching up with you. And everybody, we’re watching her on Skype, you can’t see, but she looks phenomenal.

[40:02] Jason: Yeah, you’re doing awesome.

[40:04] Heather: Well, I’m proud of you guys, you guys are doing awesome, and Bobby with the success of your business, and I’m always looking, open to sharing ideas. When I see somebody doing really well, I have no problem calling them up and saying, “Hey, what do you think of this?” You guys are lifelong friends of mine, and I love you both.

[41:37] Marlon: It’s all good, bro, we have the most beautiful weather, believe it or not, today, with the storm down in Florida on its way up the coast, we thought we were gonna get some really bad weather, and it’s actually a beautiful day, no humidity, it’s incredible.

[41:54] Jason: I like the Philadelphia report.

[41:56] Bobby: It’s a balmy, or the East Coast report, yeah, it’s a nice balmy 96 degrees here, so not too bad for Vegas.

[42:03] Marlon: Not too bad, that’s definitely not too bad, must be September.

[42:06] Bobby: So now I know you did your homework, and you did tell me you wanted to do a tribute to someone.

[42:11] Marlon: Yeah man, this actor and performer was one that really impressed me as a kid, I’ll never forget him, and I know you guys will never forget him either. It was the incredible Gene Wilder.

[42:26] Bobby: Oh man, do you know how many times I’ve watched Willy Wonka?

[42:31] Jason: It’s just a part of your childhood, it’s in your bones from your childhood just watching that. Who didn’t wanna be Charlie Bucket?

[42:40] Marlon: What’s tremendous is how it was able to be a timeless movie, even today’s children are impressed with that movie from so long ago. So I always thought to myself, the best performers are the ones who are able to transcend different generations and decades in their performances, so Gene Wilder was that guy. He passed away at 83, he had complications from Alzheimer’s disease, and I felt like it was moving to me to talk about him today.

[43:17] Marlon: He was a guy that started out as, believe it or not, not a comedic performer, he was actually a dramatic performer. And he came up through the ranks as a serious actor, and it wasn’t until he started getting into the ’70s and ’80s that he started really doing some great comedy.

[43:42] Bobby: Do you know what I remember the most besides Willy Wonka? I remember his work with Richard Pryor.

[43:48] Marlon: Oh my God, absolutely, he did four movies with Richard Pryor. Let me cap on what these were: Silver Streak, 1976, Stir Crazy, one of my favorites, 1980, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, 1989, and actually he did one last film that really no one ever heard of called Another You with Richard Pryor in 1992.

[44:15] Bobby: They worked so well together.

[44:18] Jason: Whoever’s idea it was to put those two guys together, it’s crazy.

[44:21] Bobby: Yeah. What movie would you say was your favorite film from Gene Wilder, Marlon?

[44:28] Marlon: My favorite film, believe it or not, is Young Frankenstein. “What knockers.”

[44:44] Marlon: Young Frankenstein was, even to this day, I can look at it today and I can feel youthful, just cracking up at these jokes that I first saw when I was a kid.

[44:58] Marlon: And what’s really amazing is this is actually Gene Wilder’s favorite film of his.

[45:06] Bobby: Oh, I didn’t know that, wow, I didn’t know that.

[45:08] Marlon: Yeah, this was his thing. And here’s another trivia I came across, I did not know this. So there’s a scene in Young Frankenstein where he teaches Frankenstein how to walk, it’s called the Walk This Way scene. Now, what you guys didn’t know, what I didn’t know is Steven Tyler wrote Walk This Way from that scene.

[45:45] Bobby: Wow, what, I didn’t know that tied in with Steven Tyler.

[45:51] Marlon: Steven Tyler and Aerosmith were touring, and they were just exhausted, so they went to go see the biggest movie at that time, which was Young Frankenstein. And they saw that scene, and amazingly, he got the idea to write a song called Walk This Way. And this song not only became a big hit in the ’70s, but it became a big hit in the ’80s with Run-DMC.

[46:20] Bobby: It’s true, yeah, it’s true, I mean it’s like a cult kinda film, it’s still a lot of people’s favorites.

[46:26] Jason: The fact that it came from that, Marlon, and you figuring that out, that is just crazy.

[46:31] Marlon: Yeah, this really blew my mind because I feel like I know everything, but apparently you just don’t, you find out things every day.

[46:41] Marlon: But that was my favorite film. And then Willy Wonka is probably the number two. I came across some really interesting things also with that film, when Willy Wonka walks out and he does that amazing somersault.

[47:03] Marlon: He limps with a cane and he walks out, all the kids are there that won their tickets, and people thinking, “Oh my God, he’s got a limp, poor guy.” And he does this somersault and the kids are shocked. Believe it or not, that scene was improvised, that was ad-lib.

[47:23] Bobby: Yep, I read that, I didn’t know that. Yep, I did read that.

[47:24] Marlon: That tells you how amazing Gene Wilder was, he always wanted, he was a genius, he wanted to shock the actors that he worked with, and I believe as a performer that’s what you do, you go research, you come up with these ideas, and you want that initial surprise, and he was able to do that. Also, the famous chocolate tunnel scene, when he’s going into hysterics, he improvised that whole scene, with these kids on the boat and the parents-

[47:57] Bobby: He actually scared the shit out of those kids. I read some of the actors, the young actors said that Gene Wilder was in character always, he never went out of character.

[48:10] Marlon: And to me, that is proof positive of his comedic timing, his acting genius, and his overall performance as Gene Wilder, so I gotta give it up to this guy. He will be sadly missed, he was actually living a very secluded lifestyle in Connecticut, nobody knew that he was up there.

[48:36] Marlon: And he just came and went, people wanted to take his picture, and he was truly famous to his last dying days.

[48:46] Bobby: Well, the good news is those films will live forever, and I always pop them in every once in a while, and I watch them.

[48:58] Jason: Because anybody who was a teenager in the ’80s, everybody a teenager in the ’80s grew up with those films.

[49:05] Marlon: They did. So, like you said, Bobby, in film, you do live forever, and that’s the beauty of cinema, so kudos, Gene Wilder.

[49:20] Jason: I’m so glad you keep those tissues here, Bobby, because I need a little cheering up. Marlon, you got a little cheering up here for us?

[49:28] Marlon: I do actually. One of my favorite actresses just turned 50 years old, and that would be the beautiful, the gorgeous, the sexy, the voluptuous Salma Hayek.

[49:45] Bobby: Salma, Salma Hayek is all those things and more, and she’s from Mexico, Latina.

[49:53] Marlon: And I did some research on her. Let’s just get right out of the way, she is five foot two, and I just think that is sexy as hell.

[50:02] Bobby: Prince’s height.

[50:07] Marlon: I love the shorties. And it’s funny because in her movies you don’t really get that impression that she’s that short. Cinema really does give you this kinda impression that people are taller than they are. She’s five foot two, but she really hit the mark with movies like Once Upon a Time in Mexico, of course Desperado, the very incredible Frida, and one of my favorites, Puss in Boots.

[50:37] Bobby: Can I let me tell you a little story, ’cause we were talking about Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Desperado, I actually went to the city, San Miguel in Mexico, where they shot those films.

[50:48] Marlon: Wow.

[50:48] Bobby: And I went to the bar where they had the bar scene where he was, Antonio Banderas was sitting there alone drinking, and Salma was also there, and I sat there and I had a shot of tequila.

[51:00] Bobby: And I don’t drink, but I had to do that. I was in this seedy bar where this famous movie was made, and it was just really cool to me.

[51:11] Marlon: And I imagine that is smaller than what it looks, right?

[51:14] Bobby: It’s very tiny.

[51:16] Bobby: But it’s the real deal, they actually had pictures of them on the walls. I talked to the bartender and some of the people working there, ’cause I love movie making and how things are done, and I just talk to the locals, and my wife was with me, and it was a good time.

[51:35] Marlon: Yeah, some really interesting things about her, she speaks fluent Arabic, of course Spanish, Portuguese, and English.

[51:47] Bobby: Wow, I didn’t know she spoke all those languages, that’s amazing.

[51:50] Marlon: Absolutely, she went to the College of New Mexico, she was really huge in soap operas in Mexico. What do you call those, Bobby?

[52:03] Bobby: Novellas.

[52:06] Marlon: That’s how she got her start in the ’80s. And I think she was on about four or five of them, and then she actually did make the transition into film by coming to the States, and that’s no easy task.

[52:18] Bobby: That is no easy task.

[52:20] Marlon: You gotta really know the lingo, you gotta know how the business works, and she hit the mark with Desperado, that is what blew her up.

[52:32] Bobby: She looks so good in that movie.

[52:35] Marlon: She’s amazing, I always remember the scene where she is first introduced, I always like when characters are introduced to film, and she walks down the street, that’s all she’s doing, and she’s gorgeous, she’s beautiful, and a car accident happened behind her from the two guys looking at her and not paying attention to where they were driving.

[52:56] Marlon: Well, I can understand that, to me, that represents who Salma Hayek is, so kudos to her, she just turned 50 years old.

[53:05] Bobby: Happy birthday, feliz cumpleanos.

[53:12] Marlon: Thank you, so good for Salma, happy birthday beautiful, stay young forever.

[53:20] Jason: Yeah, so Marlon, when we talk to Marlon, we only have one guest at a time, Bobby and I are physically here in Vegas recording it, you know we talked to Princess earlier, right?

[53:31] Bobby: Yeah, tell, Marlon, tell us some of your memories of Princess.

[53:36] Marlon: Well, Princess and I, we actually did a lot of dancing together, she had her very unique style, that is to this day still amazing. But it was interesting because Princess has this way of bringing these ideas to you and saying, “Listen, I got an idea for a lip sync.” And I said, “Well, what do you wanna do?”

[54:07] Marlon: And she said, “You know what, why don’t you just come to my house, I’m gonna show you the song and see what you think.” And what’s really amazing is I don’t remember if the lip sync actually was shown on the show, I think it was, I just don’t remember. And Prince came out with the album Sign o’ the Times, and we did one of those songs, and this is when I had really curly, long hair.

[54:35] Marlon: I had the Jheri curl.

[54:39] Marlon: Sporting that Jheri curl, so I had the hair, the hair was there, and she made me wear this kind of fur coat, I think Prince wears it in the Sheila E., no, Sheila Easton, You Got The Look video, I believe he wears that.

[54:54] Marlon: She found some kind of coat, and she made me put that coat on, I had the Jheri curl, and all I had to do was, the idea was I’m just looking at the camera, or a monitor, and watching her dance, and I’m doing the lyrics to the song and watching her dance, and that was it. And it was such a great idea because she has so much energy, and she’s very original also, she’s creative, very creative girl, she really stood out, she really stood out, she still is today.

[55:24] Bobby: She still is today, I mean, she does that pole dancing, but it’s not exactly what you think, it’s really quite something. Have you seen some of those videos?

[55:35] Marlon: Yeah, so, what it is is it’s a form of exercise, it’s almost like gymnastics in a sense. And she is, what she’s teaching you is flexibility and the idea that you can actually hold your own weight on the pole. And so she does these really amazing kind of really athletic gymnastic style routines with her clients.

[56:00] Marlon: And amazing, she still looks great.

[56:06] Bobby: She does, yeah, she really does, she really hasn’t changed too much.

[56:07] Marlon: Not at all, she has a family and everything, and she looks fantastic.

[56:13] Bobby: Yep, we talked about her family and her new work and everything she’s doing, it was a lot of fun, man.

[56:19] Jason: Yeah, she was a lot of fun to talk to.

[56:21] Bobby: I enjoyed that, man. So all right, Buttons.

[56:58] Bobby: Yeah, a lot of the fans have been saying that they want more time. Well, there you go, you got your first one-hour podcast.

[57:06] Jason: There, and not only that, but you got yourself some princess, and you got yourself some Marlon, and it’s just authentic, she taste it, smell it, 80s.

[57:16] Bobby: It was a good time, man. So what do you got? You got some comments from Facebook?

[57:21] Jason: I got some comments from Facebook from all of our fabulous fans out there. Now, first off, this is, she’s actually a personal friend, I’ve known her for a very long time, Rissa. Yes, I know, I don’t message much on Facebook out there, people, so.

[57:38] Bobby: Rissa’s awesome.

[57:39] Jason: Rissa is amazingly great, I’ve hung out with her several times, and she’s just great. So she says, “Jay, your Spanish is improving.” Well, you are too kind, Rissa, you know that’s absolutely not true.

[57:51] Bobby: Did you pay her to say that?

[57:52] Jason: No, believe me, she wouldn’t, she’ll let me know the truth. But okay. “Oh, the ice cream man, my hearing was bionic when it came to the ice cream truck, I could hear him four to five blocks away.”

[58:06] Bobby: That is so true.

[58:07] Jason: “But always had trouble hearing my mom yell for me to come home.” So true, so true, such a great summer memory, my favorites, drumstick, big stick, snow cone, and the candy necklace. You nailed them, you nailed them, Rissa.

[58:23] Bobby: She’s got a lot of favorites.

[58:24] Jason: Good job with number 10, guys. Well, thank you, Rissa, that means a lot.

Okay, this one is from Sandra Rodriguez, and she says, “Just caught up with episode seven.” So she’s a little behind, but she just caught up with number seven, she’s binging. She says, “Welcome aboard, Marlon, I connected with so much of this podcast, I miss Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.”

[01:00:44] Bobby: You know, it’s funny, I’ve been to that one in Hollywood, and it was a nice one, I miss Tower Records too, man.

[01:00:52] Bobby: She says, “Also, I would spend hours in that place to buy albums and cassettes, and if you wanted to buy a movie or, on VCR, all you had to do was cross the street.” So there must’ve been a place close by. “As for concert tickets, this was the place to stand in line all night and get the best seats in the house. As for phone calls at home, it was always a race to the phone before mom answered, especially if it was a boy calling you.”

[01:01:10] Bobby: Well, Jason didn’t have that problem ’cause he had his own private line.

[01:01:25] Bobby: While the rest of us had to run to pick up the phone. Anyway, just having a little fun. “I cannot thank you guys enough for these amazing podcasts every week. You not only take me back to such an easy and innocent time in my life, but you also make me smile and laugh out loud with you. You boys rock. Cannot wait to catch up with the final series.
