Episode 2: Lip Syncs and Collect Calls

[00:18] Jason: We are here live in Las Vegas, and it’s Bob and Jason’s podcast.

[00:25] Jason: Oh, that’s right, we’re changing my name.

[00:28] Bobby: My name is Bobby. I’ve changed your name to a lot of interesting things over the years.

[00:31] Jason: But anyway, we’re back here in Las Vegas, and this is our second podcast, and we’re pretty excited about it.

[00:37] Bobby: Very excited about it. We’ve done a lot of prep work for the show, and I think you’re really gonna like it. Bob and I, we’re still the same pair of knuckleheads that we were back in the ’80s.

[00:48] Jason: Yeah, not much has changed. It’s funny, I was listening to the first podcast ’cause I was interested to see how we sounded, and we sounded stupid, and I did make a little mistake.

[01:00] Bobby: A little mistake? I’d say it’s a huge mistake.

[01:03] Jason: I don’t think it was that big a deal, but I wanted to tell everybody what happened.

[01:07] Bobby: This is what we’re gonna do. First off, because I disagree with him on this point, we’re gonna put a poll up on the website so you can judge how big of a mistake it was. But he had this big impact with Kurtis Blow, and it’s a big memory.

[01:21] Jason: It was. I was there actually physically.

[01:23] Bobby: And then you had to just go and screw it all up.

[01:25] Jason: I know, I had the name of the song wrong.

[01:28] Bobby: Do you remember what the name of the song is now?

[01:29] Jason: Tell me, Jason.

[01:32] Bobby: You don’t know, do you?

[01:35] Jason: I forgot.

[01:37] Bobby: If I Ruled the World.

[01:38] Jason: That’s it, If I Ruled the World.

[01:41] Bobby: Go ahead, you gotta sing a little bit more.

[01:42] Jason: Na, na, na, na, na, na, na. Anyway, I was there, I saw him perform that song, and you know what? I’m so excited and I just forgot the name.

[01:54] Bobby: You were so flabbergasted at the fact-

[01:55] Jason: I was flabbergasted.

[01:58] Jason: So anyway, shit happens.

[02:00] Bobby: Exactly, shit happens. But we wanted to start off, we listened to the first podcast, and there are a couple things we noticed. I think the interesting thing, which I need to knock off saying, did you notice anything that you were doing that you need to change?

[02:17] Jason: Well, I like to share with everybody things, and I think I said “share” about 20 times.

[02:21] Bobby: I think it’s around that.

[02:22] Jason: But you know, what’s wrong with that? We wanna share, and we’ll probably share, we’re gonna share today something.

[02:28] Bobby: And that, ladies and gents, is already five shares at the top of the podcast. The word of the day, share.

[02:33] Bobby: Do you know what I think the interesting thing is? Oh man, I wanted to smack myself. But one of the things that, just you and I hanging out and doing all this, I mean, we’ve hung out a million times before, but we’ve never really just, at this point in our lives, gone over show stuff. Gone over memories and stuff, you know?

[02:53] Jason: Exactly.

[02:53] Bobby: So you and I doing the pictures and doing some of the videos and things that we’re working on. Ooh, did I say that? Should’ve said that.

[02:59] Jason: We haven’t, just so everybody knows, we haven’t done a photo shoot together probably in over 25 years, and we recently just started doing those again, and we’re having a lot of fun with it.

[03:10] Bobby: Yeah, we’re having a blast. It’s so funny how quickly, when I’m with you and we do this, I just feel like no time has passed.

[03:20] Jason: Yeah.

[03:20] Bobby: We’re, like I said earlier, we’re knuckleheads and that’s fine.

[03:22] Jason: We are, and I think you’ll see that in the pictures. We’re gonna be releasing lots of things over these weeks and months, and you’ll see the personalities in the pictures and all the things we do together. We’re real people. We’re just having a good time. We like being with each other, hanging out, and just keeping it real.

[03:40] Bobby: Yeah, and just joggling your memory. Because a lot of things back then, if you think about high school, it’s pretty hard for me to remember what happened freshman year, what happened sophomore year, and what happened what year. It’s just all a blur.

[03:57] Jason: It’s a blur.

[03:57] Bobby: Just like how the ’90s were a big blur. But one of the things I remember from the show is, and you brought this up with the Kurtis Blow thing, is some of the great artists that were on there, having some cool experiences with them. Is there anything that you remember in particular, out of all the ones that we’ve seen?

[04:17] Jason: I got a few. I mean, I was on there a lot of years. I got to meet so many different recording artists, and it was a great time. But a few things I remember quite vividly. I remember that Exposé was there. And everybody knows Exposé, they had a lot of great dance songs in the ’80s and early ’90s, and I think they’re still performing today, but the members have always changed.

[04:44] Jason: They were singing one of their hits, and we’re sitting there on the risers, and the lead singer came over and started singing to me.

[04:53] Bobby: Aw.

[04:54] Jason: And she tried to take off my sunglasses. She actually attempted, she put her fingers at the top and tried to pull them down, and I backed off.

[05:02] Bobby: Wow, not even for a million-selling artist?

[05:07] Jason: No. But you know what? It was kinda cool, she was actually singing to me, and that was pretty kinda neat. That’s an awesome memory. I got another one for you, but I wanna hear one of yours.

[05:16] Bobby: I would say probably one of the biggest ones was, I know I keep talking about high school here with you because it’s all coming back.

[05:23] Jason: Well, the show and high school kinda went together. That was our high school anyway.

[05:27] Bobby: Yeah. So when I went to school, of course you catch some flack from the jocks and whatnot. For everybody that was kinda cool with me, it was always, you know, you caught some flack from the jocks. So when they were together, I’d hear some ribbing. Looking back at it now, it’s kind of funny, I’ve been there, man, you expect it. But one-on-one, there were a lot of them that I was friends with. So I remember when Jodi Watley came on. I think I just recently saw this clip in our big old pile of tapes. We were there together for that one. And something, she did a dance or something, and I know I was real close to her or I talked to her or something like that.

[06:08] Bobby: And then the next day, I remember I was in geometry class, I hated geometry. And one of the jocks, I think his name was Ken, who would give me crap when he was with the other guys, actually turned to me and said, “Hey, man, what’s Jodi Watley like, man? I saw you on the show the other day with Jodi Wa-” And asking me all these questions about it, and that’s when it really, kinda clicked, you know? So all of that is all connected together, like my Jodi Watley experience and leading into my real life away from TV, in high school.

[06:42] Jason: That’s cool.

[06:42] Bobby: Yeah, that’s the one that pops in my head. What’s your other one? What do you got?

[06:48] Jason: This one was later when I was a host of the show. We had a big contest, New Kids on the Block were a big group at the time, they were like The Beatles. So we held a contest where the winner would get to go backstage, meet the New Kids on the Block at Nassau Coliseum in New York.

[07:07] Bobby: That’s up in Long Island, right?

[07:07] Jason: Yeah, up in Long Island. So they would get to go in a limousine, I would accompany them, and this would all be on television, and they’d also get to meet the New Kids on the Block.

[07:17] Bobby: Did you wear your glasses the whole time, in the limo and whatnot?

[07:20] Jason: Not in the limo, but when I was on camera.

[07:24] Jason: But anyway, so we had a winner, and her name was Liz Jacobs. So she won, we picked her up at her house in a limo.

[07:37] Bobby: Now wait a second, was this in Philadelphia where you picked her up?

[07:39] Jason: Yes, she was there.

[07:40] Bobby: That was a long ride.

[07:40] Jason: Yeah, we took the whole limo ride from Philly up to Long Island, and went backstage. She got to meet the New Kids on the Block, each one of them, take some pictures, and then she got to enjoy the concert right in the front. It was pretty cool, and I was there too.

[07:54] Bobby: So you were up front too.

[07:55] Jason: Yeah, it was great, it was a great experience.

[07:57] Bobby: Who was your favorite New Kid?

[07:59] Jason: They’re all good dudes. Donnie was probably one of my favorites, I hit it off with him, him and I spoke a lot, a good down-to-earth guy. Really liked him. They were all nice, though.

[08:13] Bobby: That’s cool. Well, you know, back then, of course, you’re gonna catch a little shit by going like, “Who’s your favorite New Kid?”

[08:20] Bobby: That’s a good story.

[08:21] Jason: Yeah, it was pretty good.

[08:23] Bobby: You know, that was one thing that was fun, with the show, was doing remote stuff.

[08:28] Jason: I loved doing remotes. That was fun, the opportunities we had, as young teenagers, and to go on these remotes, they were incredible. Some of the remotes, what are some of the remotes you remember the most?

[08:46] Bobby: I remember West Virginia.

[08:48] Jason: West Virginia was great, the people in West Virginia are so nice.

[08:51] Bobby: Yeah, they were really nice. And then later on we went down with Marquis.

[08:54] Jason: Many times we went to West Virginia, they always opened up their homes, open arms all the time.

[09:00] Bobby: That and Maryland, I remember Maryland.

[09:02] Jason: Yeah, we did the Maryland thing. I remember Great Adventure, I don’t know if you were part of it.

[09:07] Bobby: Yes.

[09:08] Jason: Great time at Great Adventure, Donny Park.

[09:10] Bobby: Yep, that was good.

[09:12] Bobby: Down the shore, Ocean City.

[09:14] Jason: Ocean City was great. One of my first remotes was Wildwood.

[09:19] Bobby: That was, again, that was before me.

[09:21] Jason: That was one of my early ones, around ’85, ’84.

[09:26] Jason: And then we did Penn’s Landing, were you part of Penn’s Landing?

[09:29] Bobby: Yes.

[09:30] Jason: And that was huge, there were thousands of people there, it was amazing, they were holding up signs, it was craziness.

[09:36] Bobby: Now, for anybody out there who doesn’t really remember this, a lot of the things we’re talking about, we’re talking about the local show before it went national. So if you’re somebody going, “I don’t know half of these places these guys are talking about,” this is the local stuff we’re talking about.

[09:50] Jason: Yeah. Lot of good times.

[09:51] Bobby: Good memories, a lot of great times. So even before you and I started doing this and talking about doing this, just the things that are happening in media, like on TV, like we mentioned last podcast, The Goldbergs-

[10:02] Jason: Right.

[10:03] Bobby: -that commercial with Anthony Michael Hall.

[10:05] Jason: Seems like a lot of references are going back to the ’80s. In today’s 2016, it feels like the ’80s sometimes when you’re watching television.

[10:13] Bobby: There are people giving their version of the ’80s.

[10:16] Bobby: Whereas we’re talking about, mostly our listeners are going to be people that had the authentic ’80s.

[10:22] Jason: They grew up with the big hair, the hairspray, and the colorful clothes.

[10:26] Bobby: Yeah, they know the difference. It’s like people from the ’80s would never remake Ghostbusters, like this Ghostbusters movie that’s coming out right now.

[10:36] Jason: I’ll check it out.

[10:38] Bobby: It’s gonna suck. Let’s just be honest with one another here.

[10:40] Jason: It probably will suck, but how do you top Ghostbusters the original?

[10:45] Bobby: And that’s the ’80s, right?

[10:47] Jason: That’s pure ’80s.

[10:48] Bobby: So now if you were to think about it off the top of your head, give me your three ’80s movies that when they come on TV you gotta watch them.

[10:57] Jason: Let me see, okay. St. Elmo’s Fire.

[11:00] Bobby: Okay, I’ll give you that one.

[11:01] Jason: One of my favorites, I’ve probably watched that 20 times. Another film that I like, Can’t Buy Me Love.

[11:07] Bobby: That’s the one I was waiting for, that was at the top of my list.

[11:10] Jason: Yes, Can’t Buy Me Love. I probably wore out that tape, watched it so many times as a young guy.

[11:17] Bobby: That was Mr. McDreamy?

[11:19] Jason: That was him, he was in that. Great movie, just a simple script, nothing complicated, but just fun.

[11:29] Bobby: But didn’t it perfectly encapsulate life?

[11:32] Jason: It did. You know who’s in that movie? The singer Gerardo.

[11:36] Bobby: Gerardo.

[11:36] Jason: Gerardo, that’s the talk show host.

[11:40] Jason: Or Rico Suave, he was in that movie, that was one of his first acting roles.

[11:48] Bobby: Now, that girl, the lead, just died.

[11:51] Jason: She did, her name is Amanda Peterson.

[11:54] Jason: Really sad, she died, I think, in the last year. Really pretty girl too.

[12:01] Bobby: But I will be honest with you, I thought one of the other girls in that movie, the brunette, was-

[12:07] Jason: There was a couple brunettes.

[12:08] Bobby: The tall one, the cheerleaders.

[12:10] Jason: Do you know where that movie was filmed?

[12:12] Bobby: No.

[12:12] Jason: I do. Tucson, Arizona. I actually went there, to the high school where they filmed that movie, and took a picture of myself in the front.

[12:22] Bobby: No way, you didn’t do it like as a pilgrimage, did you?

[12:24] Jason: No, I was just going through town, I have friends there. I said, “Yo, can you take me to the high school they shot Can’t Buy Me Love?” And they took me over there, and I actually got a picture in front of the school.

[12:35] Bobby: Maybe we could pop that up somewhere. What we’re gonna do is we want you to check out the website, because the things that we’re referencing here we’re gonna put up on the website as well.

[12:43] Jason: Can I give you a third movie?

[12:44] Bobby: Please.

[12:45] Jason: Speaking of Anthony Michael Hall, Weird Science.

[12:48] Bobby: Loved it, God, I loved Weird Science.

[12:51] Jason: Do you remember when he was sitting on the sofa, all drunk, talking shit with those guys? That was hilarious. He changed his voice. “Hey, what’s up, man?” That was so funny.

[13:03] Bobby: So those are definitely things that you put on and you watch, as you’re going by, I mean, you hear a lot of things, like, probably the generation before us, when The Godfather comes on or something, they’re like, “Okay, everything stop, I’m watching The Godfather.”

[13:19] Jason: I gotta give you a fourth movie. Because you said The Godfather, Scarface.

[13:24] Bobby: Oh, yeah, man, yes.

[13:25] Jason: Scarface, come on, man, that’s all-day ’80s.

[13:29] Bobby: That is all-day ’80s, but kind of-

[13:31] Jason: Well, it didn’t take place in the ’80s, but it was filmed in the ’80s.

[13:34] Bobby: Yes, it was filmed in the ’80s, but, you know, St. Elmo’s Fire, The Breakfast Club, Can’t Buy Me Love.

[13:40] Jason: Yeah.

[13:41] Bobby: And let’s throw Scarface in there.

[13:43] Jason: Hey, man, I just love Al Pacino, so I gotta give him some props. Scarface is definitely one of my favorites.

[13:51] Bobby: And a lot of the things today that have their roots in the ’80s and beforehand are just different, have just changed. I’ll give you an example. What I’m thinking about is when you’re a kid, everything seems so big.

[14:06] Jason: Well, maybe because we’re smaller.

[14:07] Bobby: Right, but you don’t know that when you’re a kid. So as an adult, I went back to the house I grew up in, and I was like, “Wow, this place is really small.”

[14:15] Jason: Right.

[14:16] Bobby: So along those lines, some things that you notice in today’s world that are different, changed, smaller than the ’80s. ‘Cause companies are always trying to get more air in the potato chip bag.

[14:29] Jason: Give us a couple examples.

[14:30] Bobby: Well, I saw something, a perfect example is a Big Mac. Now, a Big Mac, back in the day, they were big.

[14:35] Jason: That’s why they’re called the Big Mac.

[14:36] Bobby: Yes, exactly. And now they are these little tiny, I don’t even, I can’t even recognize them.

[14:41] Jason: Yeah, maybe Burger King’s going for margins there.

[14:43] Bobby: Yeah. And then, I’ll give you another example, soap. You’ll see the soap now, it’s like all this curved stuff that’s small, doesn’t even fit in your hand, and they’re saying it’s supposed to be ergonomically designed.

[14:53] Jason: So, so Jason, you miss that big hunk of soap?

[14:56] Bobby: Yes, I miss the big- I remember those Irish Spring commercials. Do you ever drop it on your foot?

[15:00] Jason: Yes, many, many times.

[15:00] Bobby: So there’s these little things now that when you think about the ’80s, I could just walk through the supermarket and go, “Oh my God, that Campbell’s tomato soup can-“

[15:11] Jason: Cereal boxes, I think, are smaller too.

[15:14] Bobby: You remember how big they used to be? And it wasn’t just because we were little, it’s because they used to be big. Or I’ll give you another example, a pint of ice cream, do you remember when they were huge, a gallon? Sorry, now look at, listen to me, I’m programmed, I said a pint like it’s a big deal.

[15:27] Jason: Ben & Jerry’s.

[15:28] Bobby: Yes, back when a gallon, like those big bricks.

[15:31] Jason: Yeah, like Breyers, big old brick. You can still get them, but now you see more pints than you see gallons.

[15:37] Bobby: Yes. And it’s unfortunate that the kids today don’t even know that. Now, look, I sound like an old person saying, “Get off my lawn, turn that music down.” But what’s something you notice today, in your life, that never would’ve happened in the ’80s?

[15:54] Jason: Well, let’s talk about technology a little bit. I have a cellphone like everybody else. But back in the ’80s, if you wanted to get a phone call, you had to be sitting in your house with your rotary phone just waiting for that call. You remember call waiting?

[16:08] Bobby: Oh, yeah.

[16:09] Jason: Call waiting, man. I remember New Edition did a song, Telephone Man.

[16:19] Bobby: Mr. Telephone Man.

[16:19] Jason: Yes, Mr. Telephone Man, it was about call waiting.

[16:23] Bobby: I just remembered something. Do you remember… Now, here’s the thing. When Bob and I weren’t on the show, we would always hang out. He’d come over to my place, I’d go over to his place, we’d go to the mall or whatnot, but we’d get bored.

[16:35] Jason: Speaking of the mall.

[16:36] Bobby: Wait, hold on. I remember, ’cause I had my own phone line in my room, and there were some nights that we used to get big old sacks of fan mail. Do you remember this?

[16:50] Jason: Yeah.

[16:51] Bobby: We used to, what was it, collect call. We would pick some phone numbers out of people that were random. They would say, “Call us anytime,” or “Call us collect” in their letters. Remember collect calls? And Bob and I would sit there and go, “Let’s get some pizza and call a couple.”

[17:14] Jason: Yep.

[17:14] Bobby: So we would freak people out by using a collect call. “You have a collect call from Bobby and Jason.”

[17:22] Jason: Do you accept? That was a good time.

[17:24] Bobby: That was a great time, we had a lot of fun.

[17:26] Jason: Let me go back to this, the mall. Because the mall is pure ’80s. I spent so much time in the mall. Being 12, 13, 14 years old, it was an event to go to the mall.

[17:41] Bobby: What’s your one mall that you remember?

[17:42] Jason: Deptford Mall. Cherry Hill Mall, it always had beautiful girls in the mall. But I spent more time at Deptford Mall because I lived closer to that one.

[17:51] Jason: Just being at the mall.

[17:54] Bobby: Yes, it was an experience.

[17:56] Jason: It was. Do you remember in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the whole movie pretty much was shot in a mall? And that movie is pure ’80s.

[18:05] Bobby: Yes, that is, if you wanna just reach out and experience the ’80s for a couple hours, that’s the ’80s right there.

[18:12] Jason: I mean, kids still go to malls today, but I don’t think it’s with the same fever it was in the ’80s for us. It was an event, that’s where you met people, you’re looking for girls.

[18:27] Bobby: And the girls would hang out.

[18:29] Jason: Yeah, a place to go Friday and Saturday night. Groups of girls hanging out near the pizza place or the arcade. And speaking of arcades, you don’t see many arcades anymore in the malls.

[18:36] Bobby: No, because everybody has one at home, everyone has one on their phone.

[18:39] Jason: Yeah, I got a Pac-Man machine in my house.

[18:41] Bobby: I know, it’s pretty damn cool.

[18:43] Jason: But it’s, you know, such a great time to be a teenager in the ’80s. I miss being at the mall. Let’s go to the mall right now.

[18:52] Bobby: I agree. Here in Vegas we got the Fashion Show Mall, which is kinda like that.

[18:56] Jason: It’s a beautiful mall, but it doesn’t have that feel at all.

[19:01] Bobby: If we wanna get that feel, we have to go to the Venetian and the Rock of Ages bar, that ’80s bar in the Venetian.

[19:07] Jason: Well, actually, the show moved to the Rio.

[19:10] Bobby: Did it really? I didn’t know that.

[19:11] Jason: You gotta keep up on our- come on, man.

[19:13] Bobby: I’m sorry, man, get with it.

[19:15] Bobby: I’m working on it, I’m getting my ’80s groove back on here.

[19:19] Jason: Speaking of Rock of Ages, we definitely are gonna go see that, and I think we can do a future review of that show.

[19:24] Bobby: Absolutely, we might even get a chance to talk to some people and have them on the podcast.

[19:28] Jason: That would be awesome.

[19:29] Bobby: We know some folks out here.

[19:32] Jason: The awesome ’80s.

[19:33] Bobby: That’s right. So all these thoughts now about the mall you just stuck in my head-

[19:38] Jason: Sorry, I had to do that.

[19:40] Bobby: You know, as soon as I think about the mall, my first thought really is Chess King.

[19:46] Jason: Chess King, are they still around?

[19:47] Bobby: Oh my God, no. They are long gone. People don’t even know what I’m talking about.

[19:51] Jason: Tell me some of the fashion that you would buy there, some of the clothes that you liked.

[19:55] Bobby: Really? Do I really have to go there?

[19:57] Jason: I can say one word. Parachute pants.

[20:00] Bobby: Parachute pants.

[20:02] Bobby: Z. Cavariccis and my Travel Foxes.

[20:06] Jason: I had some Z. Cavariccis. I had some Jordache.

[20:12] Bobby: I think so.

[20:13] Jason: And the other one was Sergio Valente.

[20:16] Bobby: Sergio Valente, do you remember Sergio Valente?

[20:19] Bobby: I remember Sergio Valente. So yeah, going to the mall, I think as a matter of fact, it was the Echelon Mall. Do you remember the Echelon Mall?

[20:26] Jason: Yeah, I do.

[20:27] Bobby: Okay, that was near that gym.

[20:30] Jason: Yeah, one of the gyms we used to go.

[20:31] Bobby: A gym where all of a sudden we saw Bob over the years get all pumped up there.

[20:36] Jason: Getting pumped up. So yeah, the mall. But we’ve had some other experiences in the mall as well.

[20:44] Jason: Yeah, we did. We did a big performance for an event for a charity at the Cherry Hill Mall.

[20:52] Bobby: It was, I think it was Special Olympics.

[20:54] Jason: Special Olympics, Chance to Dance, some telethon or something like that. It was pretty cool. We actually went up there and performed three songs. Do you remember the songs?

[21:02] Bobby: It was Wham!

[21:04] Jason: Well, that’s not a song, but it was by Wham!.

[21:09] Bobby: Everything She Wants.

[21:10] Jason: That’s one.

[21:11] Bobby: It was Freedom.

[21:13] Jason: That’s two.

[21:14] Bobby: And it was Edge of Heaven.

[21:15] Jason: That’s three, yep, three great songs.

[21:18] Bobby: And that’s the only time we ever did Everything She Wants, isn’t it?

[21:20] Jason: It’s the only time we ever performed live in front of anybody, Everything She Wants.

[21:23] Bobby: And you wanna hear something really interesting? Now, this is for everybody else out there. We’ve actually got it all on video.

[21:30] Jason: We do, and we’re gonna definitely share that in the future because that is original material that we have.

[21:35] Bobby: We had our own people film it.

[21:36] Jason: We did, we filmed it, and it’s pretty fun to watch, it just brings you back. There were so many people there, it was a lot of fun.

[21:44] Bobby: It was an awesome time.

[21:45] Jason: Do you remember, we had this idea, we got some Monopoly money, and we just threw it out in the crowd randomly.

[21:52] Bobby: Yeah, but we used to do that all the time.

[21:54] Jason: We did that in one of our lip syncs on television called Freedom.

[21:58] Bobby: Yes, we did.

[22:00] Jason: And we’ll talk about that later too.

[22:01] Bobby: Yes, we’ll talk about that as well. I think we should get some of that footage together, it was the Cherry Hill Mall, right?

[22:08] Jason: The Cherry Hill Mall.

[22:08] Bobby: Some of that footage together, and if you guys wanna share it or do anything with it, you know.

[22:11] Jason: And what about, do you remember the New Shamony Mall? What happened there?

[22:14] Bobby: Yes, the New Shamony Mall, that’s a good story.

[22:17] Bobby: Okay, now, I think we brought up in the last podcast, remember that show Putting on the Hits?

[22:22] Jason: Yeah, Putting on the Hits.

[22:23] Bobby: I will say this much, props to Jimmy Fallon, because Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show bringing back the lip sync stuff that everybody does now.

[22:31] Jason: He’s great, man.

[22:32] Bobby: He is. But the fact that you see Tom Cruise and everybody going on doing these lip syncs, when you talk about lip syncs now, it doesn’t feel so-

[22:42] Jason: There’s even a show about lip syncs, on cable.

[22:46] Bobby: Really? I’ve never seen it.

[22:47] Jason: Yeah, we’ll have to check it out.

[22:48] Bobby: Wow, I must live in a rock, in a desert.

[22:51] Jason: Well, you are in a desert.

[22:52] Bobby: Yeah, exactly. So, what was my point? Where were we?

[22:57] Jason: Puttin’ on the hits.

[22:58] Bobby: Oh, that’s right, Puttin’ on the Hits. Listen to me, I’m having an elder moment here. Yeah, we did, they had some type of open call or something. I forget how we found out about it. Somebody called me or something, and they had an open call at the Neshaminy Mall, and Bob and I at this point had been on the show for a little while, so people kinda sorta knew who we were in the Delaware Valley. So him and I decided, “Screw it, let’s go audition for this.”

[23:25] Jason: Yeah, let’s do it. Puttin’ on the Hits, man.

[23:27] Bobby: So we went into the audition room that they held in a big conference room, and as we were walking up, I think a couple people recognized us. See, ’cause here’s the thing, we were professional lip syncers.

[23:40] Jason: We actually, we were professional lip syncers at the time.

[23:45] Bobby: So we went and we did Edge of Heaven, right?

[23:48] Jason: Yep, that was our song.

[23:50] Bobby: And the place was mobbed, it was packed. I think we have some pictures from it, but I don’t have any video. And we performed, and the place was pretty enthusiastic, to say the least, right?

[24:01] Jason: It was, and what did we finish, runner-up?

[24:05] Bobby: Yes, they wouldn’t let us win.

[24:06] Jason: Second place, yeah, they didn’t let us win. It was a guy who did Stevie Wonder.

[24:11] Bobby: Did, “If you really love me.”

[24:13] Jason: Which he did a good job, but you know what? We were robbed.

[24:15] Bobby: Yes, we were robbed.

[24:16] Jason: But it’s all good, man.

[24:17] Bobby: And then I think we had to do a meet and greet for about an hour and a half afterwards.

[24:21] Jason: Yeah, remember that? I remember I was wearing a black and white Michael Jackson jacket.

[24:25] Bobby: Oh, the black and white Michael Jackson jacket.

[24:29] Jason: Yeah, I don’t have that anymore, but you know what I have? I got the second place trophy that we won, it was like a record.

[24:40] Bobby: Because every time we did something like this, we would flip a coin about who would win what.

[24:44] Jason: Yes.

[24:45] Bobby: And I do remember you winning.

[24:48] Jason: And I have it somewhere, I’ll try and dig it up, and we could share a picture of that.

[24:52] Bobby: Make sure, be prepared.

[24:53] Jason: I’m not.

[24:54] Bobby: I can tell. Do you remember also, we did one at the Civic Center in Philadelphia.

[25:01] Jason: Oh, yeah, man.

[25:02] Bobby: How the hell did we end up… we actually did a lip sync and opened up for Bon Jovi.

[25:06] Jason: This is when Bon Jovi was just coming up, and we were actually in the green room at the time, and they had a whole buffet of food, and we were treated like kings there. It was great.

[25:18] Bobby: Which was a very big difference to how we were normally treated.

[25:22] Jason: It’s true. But to get up on that stage, there were thousands of people there, and then Bon Jovi came out after us. And to think we’re just up there lip syncing-

[25:32] Bobby: A Wham! song.

[25:32] Jason: -like, “What are we doing here, Jason?”

[25:34] Bobby: I know, it’s crazy. And the awesome thing about it was everybody was positive about it. We got a lot of positive feedback from the crowd.

[25:44] Jason: Yeah, it’s frightening sometimes to get out there, but we did it so many times it was kinda second nature.

[25:51] Bobby: And not just doing it so many times, the reaction that we got really made it- even the crowd, good for us too. It wasn’t like we walked into a hostile crowd.

[25:59] Jason: It’s great when the crowd reacts well, because it just makes you perform even better, I think.

[26:04] Bobby: I agree. And then when we went on, and we’ve got video of this too, we went on tour down South and did our own stuff.

[26:11] Jason: Yeah, the Marquee stuff.

[26:13] Bobby: Of which we have some songs that we’re gonna add to the podcast as we go along.

[26:16] Jason: We definitely gotta do a segment in the future about Marquee and how that all started up. It’s a long story.

[26:23] Bobby: Yes.

[26:23] Jason: But a good one.

[26:24] Bobby: It’s a good one. We don’t wanna bore anybody or anything like that. But I think this podcast is coming along pretty well.

[26:32] Jason: It is, man. I’m enjoying going back in time and reminiscing and just remembering all these things.

[26:40] Bobby: And we both hope that us talking about these things maybe brings some things back in your memory of things that you remember. Because it was an awesome time, and as we get older and we look back now, we appreciate that stuff even more, it’s so cool that you’re able to experience it again by watching it or listening to things.

[27:00] Jason: Yeah, and I’m glad we have a lot of this footage and pictures, and we definitely wanna share those with everybody that’s into this. There’s that word again, share, Bob, share.

[27:10] Bobby: That’s right. See, Bob loves to share.

[27:12] Jason: But no, man, it’s really cool to be able to go back and to remember. I’m enjoying this a lot.

[27:19] Bobby: Yeah, me too. You’re not bad to hang out with.

[27:21] Jason: So anyway, we’re gonna have another show, I’m sure, in the near future, right?

[27:25] Bobby: Yes, we’re gonna have another show. We’ve got some other things that we’re working on. We don’t wanna let it all out of the bag yet, but one of the reasons we started doing this is because we’ve got some things on the horizon that may come to fruition and may be really, really cool.

[27:38] Jason: Very exciting things.

[27:39] Bobby: Yes, very exciting things, and if you’re here at episode two, you are in on the ground floor. You can listen to us and go, “Man, I remember when those guys were just sharing and everything was so awesome.”

[27:54] Jason: And here’s what’s interesting.

[27:54] Bobby: Exactly. What’s interesting is you can watch us develop again as we march on through to 2020 and all the years that we still have to go.

[28:05] Jason: We do. There’s so much material, and we’re gonna bring it to you every week. I think we’re gonna do this weekly, right?

[28:12] Bobby: Yeah, we’re thinking about it, maybe even a little bit more than that.

[28:14] Jason: We’ll see what’s happening, and we definitely want your ideas and suggestions, and we want your feedback too.

[28:24] Bobby: Yeah, so let us know on Facebook, or shoot us an email, or join our mailing list, and be a part of this with us, because there are so many things, obviously you can tell from Bob with his Kurtis Blow thing and his Exposé thing, there’s a lot of holes in that memory there.

[28:40] Jason: But you know, it’s cool. The coolest thing is that we’re sharing these stories with you. It’s the first time we’ve ever done this. A lot of these things you’re hearing, nobody’s ever heard.

[28:50] Bobby: We haven’t really even spoken about it in forever.

[28:51] Jason: No, we haven’t. Even Jason and I, there are things I’m talking about and things he’s talking about, and we’re hearing them for the first time. So it’s kind of a cool experience that we’re able to all come together in this little podcast.

[29:03] Bobby: And we would love to know things if you can relate, which I’m sure you can, to the things that we’re talking about. Maybe if you have some pictures or some things that you wanna send in to us that we can put up on the website.

[29:13] Jason: Yeah, if you have questions, things you want us to talk about.
